Today, baseball retains a strong following and remains by far the most popular spectator sport in Taiwan. Several Taiwanese players have also gone on to successful careers in the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) and Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), and the Taiwanese national team is considered to be one of the strongest in the world.

People from Kinmen and Matsu do not identify as Taiwanese and instead identify as Kinmenese/Matsunese or simply Chinese.

Traditional pastimes

Rice, noodles, and seafood are staples of the diet, while vegetables and fruits are abundant due to the island’s fertile land. Taiwanese cuisine is known for its emphasis on fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and creative preparation techniques, making it one of the most beloved culinary traditions in Asia. Indigenous festivals, such as the Harvest Festival and the Orchid Island Ceremony, are also celebrated by Taiwan’s indigenous communities, reflecting their unique cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.

When the People’s Liberation Army won the Chinese Civil War, much of the National Revolutionary Army retreated to Taiwan along with the government. The 1947 Constitution of the ROC reformed it into the Republic of China Armed Forces, making it the national army rather than the army of a political party. Units which surrendered and remained in mainland China were either disbanded or incorporated into the People’s Liberation Army. Typhoons are most common in July, August and September.271 During the winter (November to March), the northeast experiences steady rain, while the central and southern parts of the island are mostly sunny. Authorities have also issued orders to close schools and offices in the central and southern parts of Taiwan, including the coastal cities of Kaohsiung, Taichung and Tainan as well as Pingtung, Chiayi and Miaoli counties.

A valid travel plan is to buy a flight ticket from Shanghai to Taipei with a connection to a third country or territory (Hong Kong, in this case). When leaving Shanghai, show your Hong Kong and Macao Travel Permit to the immigration officer and declare your destination is Hong Kong. When entering Taiwan, present your Taiwan Entry Permit to Taiwanese immigration officer. The two main parties in Taiwanese politics are the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
When reporting a major crime, it is advisable to contact the Foreign Affairs unit in addition to officers at the local precinct. Although standard Mandarin in Taiwan is nearly identical to standard Mandarin in mainland China (with differences mostly in technical and translated terms invented post-1949), most people in practice speak a distinctly accented version known as Taiwanese Mandarin. For example, Taiwanese Mandarin tends to not differentiate between the “S” and “Sh” or the “f” and “h” sounds in Mandarin. All people schooled after 1945 are generally fluent in Mandarin, though older people from rural areas often have a very thick accent. Some elderly people do not speak Mandarin as they were schooled in Japanese or not at all.
